Visit to the Rotary Club of Dillenburg - 16 to 18 September 2016
We paid a return visit to the Rotary Club of Dillenburg over the weekend with nine members and their wives flying out from Birmingham to Frankfurt. We were met by our hosts at the airport and taken by coach to Herborn for a reception at the Schlosshotel where we met the rest of the club and our hosts for the weekend.
On Saturday we visited the town of Wetzlar for a guided tour followed by lunch at the Wirt am Dom. We then went to the Leica factory where we could view the factory museum but unfortunately the shop was closed!
The day was concluded with dinner at the Bartmanns Hotel in Dillenburg. On Suday we started with brunch at the Schlosshotel before our departure to Frankfurt for the flight home.
All who made the trip agreed it was an excellent weekend and we were well looked after by our hosts who as well as providing the accomodation liberally provided the food an drink (a little too much of the latter for some!). We look forward to their return visit to Hereford in 2018.

Visit to Clearwell Caves - 4 September 2016
The club visited Clearwell Caves in the Forest of Dean. We started with a snack in the cafe before taking a guided tour of the old iron ore workings.
The caves are a natural formation and the iron ore was then deposied on the walls of the cave by precipitation out of water. The solidified ore was than removed by miners over the last few centuries leving the natural cave formation behind. There is no longer commercial extraction of iron ore but ochre of various shades is still extracted and refined by our guide.
